Phuket Airport: More Connected Than You Think

Phuket Airport: More Connected Than You Think

For anyone living on the island or seriously considering the move, Phuket International Airport is one of those things that quietly makes life a lot easier than people expect.

The assumption many expats arrive with is that island life means sacrifice when it comes to travel. That getting anywhere meaningful requires a connection through Bangkok, a long transfer, or a complicated itinerary. In reality, Phuket’s airport has matured considerably, and for day-to-day life as a resident, it holds up surprisingly well.

A Growing Network of Direct Routes

The route map out of Phuket has expanded steadily in recent years. Direct flights now connect the island to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Doha, Muscat, and a growing number of Chinese cities. For residents with family back in the UK or Europe, the options are improving too ; Air France launched direct Paris service in late 2025, Virgin Atlantic begins direct London Heathrow flights in October 2026, and TUI has operated the Gatwick route for some time. That means getting home, or welcoming visitors, no longer automatically means a Bangkok layover.

India-based connections have also strengthened considerably, with Akasa Air and IndiGo both operating direct services from Bengaluru and other Indian cities ; relevant for the island’s growing South Asian expat community.

The Numbers Behind the Airport

This isn’t a small regional airport propped up by charter flights. Phuket handled over 17 million passengers in 2025 across more than 106,000 flights. It operates two main terminals;one for international travel, one for domestic;and has undergone significant infrastructure upgrades in recent years, including runway improvements that have pushed throughput to 25 aircraft per hour.

For residents, that scale matters. It means competition between airlines, which keeps prices reasonable on popular routes. It means multiple daily options to Bangkok if you do need to connect onwards. And it means the airport functions with the efficiency and facilities you’d expect of a serious international gateway.

Getting to the Airport Is Straightforward

One underrated aspect of Phuket’s airport is its location. Sitting in the north of the island near Nai Yang, it’s genuinely convenient for residents in Bang Tao, Laguna, and Cherng Talay;some of the most popular expat areas. A taxi or Grab ride from those zones takes 15 to 25 minutes, making early morning departures far less painful than in many cities where the airport is an hour or more from residential areas.

Even residents in the south ; Rawai, Nai Harn, and Chalong ; face a journey of 45 to 60 minutes in normal traffic, which compares favourably to airports serving equivalent-sized cities elsewhere in the region.

What’s Coming Next

The airport is not standing still. Airports of Thailand has announced plans for a major new international terminal, and a study is underway for a second Phuket airport;the proposed Andaman Airport;with a projected capacity of up to 60 million passengers annually. That’s a long-term project, but it signals real confidence in the island’s aviation future.

In the shorter term, new routes continue to be announced regularly, and the airport’s slot capacity is being increased to accommodate growing demand.

The Bottom Line

Phuket Airport won’t replace Singapore Changi for sheer connectivity, and anyone needing to travel extensively across Northeast Asia will still find Bangkok a more practical base for onwards connections. But for the vast majority of residents;visiting family in Europe, travelling around Southeast Asia, or taking regular breaks to neighbouring countries;Phuket’s airport delivers far more convenience than its island-getaway reputation might suggest.

For expats weighing up where to put down roots in Thailand, it’s one less compromise than you might think.
